Board of Education approves charter status for Hall High, avoiding closure

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KATV) — After talks of Hall-West High School of Innovation closing its doors, the school will remain open at least for the next school year, as the Arkansas State Board of Education approved the school’s application to become a district ran conversion charter school.

This idea was looked at last September, after the school failed to bring in enough students for their previous incoming freshman class. The goal was to design a program the district can’t currently run under state accreditation rules for traditional public schools.

Darryl Smith from the Arkansas Department of Education’s Office of School Choice explained, “A conversion charter typically is really just a public school that’s in a local school district that is being converted into something that’s a little more flexible.”…
