Gamers, Brace Yourselves: MSI Warns of Significant Price Hikes on Laptops and GPUs

For those eyeing a new gaming laptop or graphics card, prepare for a potentially steeper price tag, especially if MSI hardware is on your wish list. The company has announced plans to increase prices on its gaming laptops, desktops, and graphics cards by an estimated 15% to 30%, a move driven by soaring component costs.

This news emerged from a recent investor briefing where MSI executives addressed the mounting pressures of an ongoing global memory shortage. Huang Jinqing, MSI General Manager, cautioned investors that the broader PC market could see a contraction of 10% to 20% by 2026, attributing this to persistent component shortages and rising manufacturing expenses.

The Root Cause: A Global Memory Shortage

The primary factor behind these impending price adjustments is the global memory shortage, which has dramatically driven up the price of DRAM modules over the past year. Reports indicate that MSI currently holds only one to two months of secure memory inventory, creating significant uncertainty for future production planning.

Adding to the challenge, major DRAM suppliers like Samsung and SK Hynix are reportedly reluctant to commit to long-term supply agreements, making it difficult for manufacturers to secure stable component pricing. This surge in costs isn’t limited to laptops; MSI executives confirmed that prebuilt gaming desktops and handheld gaming devices, both heavily reliant on DRAM, could also be impacted.

MSI’s Strategy Amidst Market Slowdown

In response to the shifting market, MSI appears to be adjusting its overall product strategy. Huang stated that the company intends to prioritize higher-end products, reducing its focus on hardware with lower profit margins. This strategic shift could see MSI’s product lineup lean more towards premium gaming systems, where higher prices are more easily justifiable.

Furthermore, MSI is accelerating its production of AI servers, aiming to leverage the booming demand for AI infrastructure. The company hopes that its data-center business can help offset the volatility currently observed in the consumer PC market. However, if component shortages persist through 2026, gamers should anticipate noticeably higher prices for their preferred laptops, GPUs, and other PC hardware.
