Nature’s Nursery issues downed squirrel warning amid windstorms

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Waterville nursery is informing community members on what they should do if they see downed squirrels amid this week’s windstorms.

Nature’s Nursery told 13 Action news that they have admitted over a dozen downed squirrels since windstorms began earlier this week.

Since squirrels nest in trees, and workers say the continued wind could result in downed nests or babies. The nursery is encouraging community members to do the following in their own backyard:

  • Take a brief walk through the yard and look for fallen babies or nests.
  • Look up at the trees for signs of a mother acting frantic, as this could be an indication of babies impacted by the wind.
  • Listen for babies in distress making a loud, chirping sound.
  • Look out for other nests – squirrels build two nests, so if one has been damaged, the mother might be able to move the babies to the other one.

Nature’s Nursery encouraged anyone who sees a downed squirrel to contact them by texting 419-910-4038. They said to not bring any babies to them until you’ve texted, as they often can help on scene…
