Blizzard creates hazardous road conditions in Iowa, parts of I-80 & I-35 remain closed

DES MOINES, Iowa — Dangerous road conditions remain Monday morning, brought on by a blizzard that began working its way across Iowa on Sunday.

Travel is not advised in much of the state as of 7:15 a.m., and the Iowa Department of Transportation has shut down most of I-80 as well as a good portion of I-35. The snow whipped around by the wind is causing major visibility issues for drivers and emergency responders have been busy responding to crashes across the state overnight.

Roads closed according to IDOT:

  • I-80 EASTBOUND from I-880 to West Des Moines, westbound traffic reopened around 7:30 a.m
  • I-80 from Altoona to Coralville
  • I-35 from Ames to the Minnesota border

Truck stops along the closed routes are packed with semis, waiting for the IDOT to determine that the roads are safe enough to reopen.
