Rain barrels: Sustainable solution to water runoff, conservation

GRANGER, Iowa– Polk County Conservation hosted a workshop where attendees learned how to make a rain barrel and the importance of water conservation.

Lewis Major, Naturalist with Polk County Conservation, said that water runoff is an issue in our homes and neighborhoods. Nearly 70% of neighborhoods are covered with impermeable surfaces, which means rainwater can’t soak into the ground at that location. That includes roofs, driveways, roads and sidewalks.

One way to help conserve water and take that water in is by a rain barrel. He said that the water is great for any outdoor uses like watering and garden and plants, and maybe even washing your car…
