Mylar balloons blamed for outage that impacted thousands in New Orleans East

NEW ORLEANS — More than 2,000 Entergy customers were left in the dark Sunday night after a mylar balloon struck a power line in New Orleans East, the utility said.

The outage was reported around 6:30 p.m. and lasted about an hour, affecting residents and businesses in the Plum Orchard and Read Boulevard West neighborhoods.

Mylar balloons and confetti have been blamed for several power outages in recent years. In August 2024, the New Orleans City Council banned the release of mylar balloons, but it did not stop the issue.
