(KMDL-FM) Southern Living Magazine has once again fueled a fire that we hope never goes out. The flames of the “who does the best barbecue” fire seem to be eternal and forever changing. Which is funny because, as steeped in tradition as the art of barbecue is, there are always innovations and ideas being introduced.
Another thing about barbecue that seems to burn eternally is the passion for it. Those who love to cook it, really love to cook it. Those who love to eat it, we will be back in line for a second helping before most people have finished their first. And we haven’t even started to argue about the sauce and the mopping.
Why Is Barbecue So Popular in Louisiana and the Gulf South?
Needless to say, barbecue and college football go hand in hand, which is probably why the folks at Southern Living pay attention to both of those facets of life below the Mason-Dixon line. And while we aren’t pushing any football talk for today, we do have some interesting developments on the barbecue front.

Southern Living Magazine solicited its readers via an online poll to identify the best barbecue joint in their state. Over 17,000 people took part in the poll, and there were some tried and true barbecue names that made the list.
Football fans who’ve made the trek to Tuscaloosa know about Dreamland. Once upon a time in Lafayette, we had a location of The Shed, which was Mississippi’s choice for best barbecue. That location has since become a specialty meats store that is excellent in its own right.
