Nuisance changes advance at Schenectady gas station

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Corrective measures are underway at the Speedway on Brandywine Avenue in Schenectady after the city temporarily closed the business for nuisance violations. City officials said on Monday that the gas station and convenience store have started executing operational and environmental changes.

Coordinating the changes with the Schenectady Police Department, Speedway now has overnight operational controls that limit public access inside the store, removing window obstructions for better visibility, and cutting back weeds and vines behind the property. Employees are also completing training in robbery prevention, workplace safety, and operational procedures, as well as in security improvements.

The temporary closure that began on March 1, originally planned for a week, lasted 24 hours. Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy told NEWS10 on March 2 that the temporary closure ended early due to the gas station’s good-faith effort to improve the customer experience.

When the city announced the temporary closure in late February, they said Speedway had accumulated 107 nuisance points in a year and 128 points in two years. The city said it will continue to oversee Speedway’s progress using a location-specific calls-for-service monitoring dashboard…
