Senators Peters, Slotkin ask National Weather Service for answers after deadly southwest Michigan tornadoes

MICHIGAN, USA — Michigan’s U.S. Senators sent a letter to the head of the National Weather Service late last week, asking for clarity in the wake of one of the strongest tornadoes to hit the state in nearly 50 years.

The severe storm on Friday, March 6, spun up four separate tornadoes: an EF-1 in Cass County, an EF-2 in St. Joseph County, an EF-3 in Branch County and an EF-0 in Calhoun County.

The Union City tornado reached wind speeds of 160 mph and grew to about 1,500 feet wide at its peak, the NWS said. The tornado was only on the ground for about nine minutes, but it destroyed multiple homes and buildings and caused immense damage to other buildings while also uprooting trees…
