Severe storms cause widespread damage in Elmore County

Severe storms rumbled through the River Region early Monday moring causing widespread damage due to downed trees.

Elmore County appeared to be the hardest-hit area, with about five miles of Highway 111 closed north of Wetumpka. The county was under both a tornado watch and severe thunderstorm warning about 3:30 a.m., March 16, said Keith Barnett, director of the Elmore County Emergency Management Agency.

“The first damage reports started coming in about 4 a.m.” he said. “It was reported about 40 trees were down in an area from Coosa River Parkway to Crenshaw Road on 111. There were also about 10 power poles that were snapped.”…
