Local man sentenced to prison for filing false tax returns

(FOX40.COM) — A former Sacramento man will serve time in prison for filing nine false tax returns and stealing more than $1 million in refunds.

Christopher Eugene Guilford was sentenced Monday to four years and three months in prison after filing fraudulent tax returns for years. Eric Grant, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California, said the sentence shows that the government will hold tax cheats accountable.

“Filing false tax returns is not a shortcut to easy money; it’s a federal crime,” Grant said in a statement. “By submitting nine fraudulent returns and stealing more than $1.17 million in refunds, the defendant tried to cheat the American taxpayer.”…
