Storm brings downed wires, brush fire, and outages to Berks as fire station opens doors to residents

EARL TWP., Pa. — With widespread power outages affecting much of the region overnight, the Earl Township Fire Station opened its social hall Monday night to give residents a place to warm up, charge devices, use restrooms, and access water.

Fire crews said they handled multiple calls during the storm, including one incident where downed wires sparked a small brush fire. Earlier Tuesday in Union Township, emergency responders also dealt with downed wires and large fallen trees along Harmony Road, which left residents in two homes temporarily blocked in.

With power out for many households, some residents were seen carrying buckets of water back to their homes.
