The 2 women behind UNC Charlotte’s growth from a high school classroom to over 30,000 students

From a small office in a local high school in 1946 to more than 30,000 students 80 years later, UNC Charlotte’s growth traces back to two women: Bonnie Ethel Cone and Mary Rebecca Denny.

UNC Charlotte’s origins stem from an influx of demand for higher education after World War II. Hundreds of veterans returned home to the Charlotte area seeking opportunities to further their careers post-war.

With such a sudden surge in incoming college students, universities across North Carolina were admitting more students than they could handle. In response, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill created several temporary branches across the state to help expand access to higher education…
