Navy delays decommissioning of USS Nimitz until 2027

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The U.S. Navy has decided to extend the service life of its oldest serving aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz, until next year.

The military had originally planned to decommission the aircraft carrier this spring, but decided to keep the ship active so that the Navy could maintain at least 11 operational aircraft carriers in its fleet as mandated by a U.S. law governing the Armed Forces.
