MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – After one man died and several others suffered gunshot wounds during back-to-back shootings on the night of Joe Cain Day, Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis moved quickly to reassure the public ahead of Fat Tuesday.
“What I want the people of Mobile and the people visiting Mardi Gras to know is that you are safe,” he said at the time. “Come to the parade. Enjoy some time with your family. Catch some MoonPies. Know that you’re safe. This incident, from what we know, was not in any way related to Mardi Gras or the parades.”
But federal court documents tell a different story, describing an “elevated threat level” after that shooting and fears of gang-related retaliation…
