Ohio man accused of Grand Island murder remains unfit to stand trial

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – An Ohio man accused of killing a Missouri resident at a rest stop near Grand Island remains mentally incompetent to stand trial, a district judge ruled Tuesday.

James Thompson, 23, is charged with murder, assault and five weapons charges in the June 2024 death of 72-year-old Gary Weaver of Eureka, Missouri. The incident occurred at a rest stop near Grand Island.

Court records show District Judge Andrew Butler found that Thompson continues to be unfit to proceed with trial following a recent competency evaluation at Lincoln Regional Center.
