Iowa City warns of scam involving people posing as city employees

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – The City of Iowa City is alerting residents about recent scam activity involving people posing as city employees in an attempt to collect fraudulent payments for services or applications.

In one recent incident, a resident received an email containing what appeared to be a legitimate invoice displaying the city’s logo. The message included vague payment language referencing ACH transfer instructions and directed the recipient to reply to the email for additional details. The message concluded with a request for prompt payment.

The city said it will never ask for bank account information, login credentials, or Social Security numbers, and will not demand wire transfers or other untraceable forms of payment…
