The Anchorage Philatelic Society is offering a pictorial postmark to commemorate the 54th anniversary of the Iditarod Trail sled dog race, more commonly known as the Iditarod. The cancel depicts the profile of a typical sled dog surrounded by cancellation day details.
Nicknamed the “last great race on Earth,” the annual long-distance sled dog race took place in Alaska March 7. The race from Anchorage to Nome includes mushers and a team of between 12 and 16 dogs, of which at least 5 must be on the towline at the finish line. The competition covers roughly 1,049 miles of rugged Alaskan terrain in 8 to 15 days or more…
