Durham City Council hears public budget, passes amendment to city contract

Monday’s city council meeting featured a public hearing on the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year and Durham’s long-term development plan, as well as a vote on an amendment to the city’s contract with Hayti Promise Community Development Corporation and St. Joseph’s Historic Foundation.

During the public budget hearing, Durham residents discussed their budget priorities but funding for Durham is far from abundant.

Much of the local funding that does not come from taxes is provided by the federal and state governments. Federal government spending has seen sharp cuts in the past year, and the North Carolina State Legislature has been unable to finalize a state budget.

Councilmember Carl Rist took a far from optimistic note when describing the budget process to INDY Week, saying, “we don’t really have the same ability to dream big.”…
