Toledo expert weighs in on meteor seen over parts of Ohio

A flash of light and loud explosion seen across eastern Ohio Tuesday morning is drawing considerable attention from astronomical experts of all kinds.

“It is most certainly true the big sound, the explosion, was caused by a meteor that entered our atmosphere and eventually burned up, creating a big sound and the light that streaked across the sky,” said Michael Cushing, the director of the Ritter Planetarium and Brooks Observatory at the University of Toledo.

The National Weather Service office in Cleveland also confirmed in a post on X that its Geostationary Lightning Mapper “does suggest that the boom was a result of a meteor.”…
