National Weather Service warns of potential ice jam flooding along Yukon, Tanana rivers this spring

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The National Weather Service has released its first spring breakup forecast of the year, flagging conditions along the upper Yukon and Tanana rivers that could lead to ice jam flooding.

Kyle Van Peursem of the Alaska Pacific River Forecast Center said the combination of heavy snowpack and thick, rough river ice is raising concern heading into the season.

“They see they have a ton of snow on the river ice. The ice is thick. The ice is jumbled up and it’s rough. And it just seems like it’s going to be very resistant to breaking up,” Van Peursem said…
