Details of the accusations against Chávez have not been made public, but rumors of potential abuses by Chávez, who died in 1993 at age 66, have roiled Chicano activist organizations in the last several days. The New York Times is preparing to publish the result of a yearslong investigation into his past, according to sources in Bakersfield and elsewhere. That report is expected sometime next month.
