City of Bakersfield seeks approval for proposed SE Bakersfield community garden

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The city of Bakersfield is working to transform a vacant lot in southeast Bakersfield into a community garden to be used by residents and students for community events, education, gardening and more.

The proposed community garden is planned on 0.13 acres at 508 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., according to the Bakersfield Planning Commission meeting agenda for Thursday.

The site is near bus stops, bike lanes and pedestrian walkways, as well as residential neighborhoods. City officials said hundreds of residents could access the garden as it is in walking distance.

The project plans to add a water fountain with benches and arbors, paved walkways, raised garden beds, a tool shed to store equipment and picnic tables, according to the agenda. The garden would be bordered by a steel fence and have a donor wall acknowledging the garden’s contributors, as well as overhead signage…
