‘Ya’ll tore my life apart’: Former jail guard says sheriff’s office retaliated after he reported misconduct

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Niko Carter said he paid a steep price for crossing the thin blue line.

The former Erie County corrections officer says he reported a colleague for allegedly using racist slurs and raised concerns about the death of an inmate in August 2023 — and soon after became the target of a criminal investigation and eventually charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor.

The case rested almost entirely on claims from a paid jail informant with 49 convictions. She accused Carter of being a key source of drugs, cigarettes, and lighters and of leading a gang inside the jail…
