Iowa City working to address homeless encampment concerns, provide resources

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Approximately 15 to 18 people are living in an encampment near the Terry Trueblood recreation area according to a January point-in-time count from the city of Iowa City.

After people living outside the Shelter House homeless shelter had to leave the property this fall, the encampment near the river expanded. Some individuals had been living in the area for years, according to Laura Bergus, a city councilmember.

Deputy City Manager Chris O’Brien told TV9 the city has created a group through a partnership with Shelter House to send employees and public safety staff to perform weekly walk-throughs. He added that the city has placed between three to five garbage cans there for weekly collection…
