A Chicago man is heading to federal prison after orchestrating a massive $1.55M fraud scheme involving SNAP benefits.
David Quinones, 45, was sentenced to four years and four months behind bars after pleading guilty to wire fraud last year. The sentencing, handed down on March 9th, marks the end of a years-long operation that exploited a program designed to help families put food on the table.
Chicago Man Sentenced in $1.5M SNAP Fraud Scheme
According to prosecutors, he gained access to more than 1,200 SNAP Link cards between 2018 and 2023. His method? Simple. Very simple. But very illegal. He offered recipients cash or other items in exchange for access to their benefit cards.
Once he had control, he used the cards at authorized retail stores, pretending to be the rightful cardholder. He then purchased goods, resold most of them, and pocketed the profits.
