Oregon nonprofits sue GoFundMe for making fundraisers without their consent

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A group of Oregon nonprofits is suing the crowdfunding website GoFundMe after it allegedly used artificial intelligence to create accounts in their names without their knowledge.

The lawsuit, filed March 11 in U.S. District Court in Eugene, accuses GoFundMe of falsely leading donors to believe the fundraisers were affiliated with and endorsed by the nonprofits.

It also accuses the company of collecting donations from users who believed they were giving directly to the Oregon nonprofit, but were instead giving to GoFundMe. The company then allegedly charged the donors a fee for making the donation and solicited a tip…
