Bessemer family honors slain father one year later while seeking accountability in lawsuit

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A sky filled with balloons and the quiet release of doves marked a painful milestone Tuesday, as one Bessemer family honored the life of a son, father, and friend taken too soon.

One year after the death of Terence Bernard Summers Jr., known to loved ones as “Terry,” grief still lingers — but so does a growing call for accountability.

Summers, a well-known barber in the Bessemer community and a father of three, died March 18, 2025, while on his way to a haircut appointment. According to investigators, his vehicle struck a large metal chain on the roadway near Academy Drive and the Alabama Adventure exit, leading to a crash that claimed his life.
