Detroit Schools Introduce Controversial Visitor Policy

Detroit Public Schools Community District installed a check-in system for guests. Every person must show photo identification or get their picture snapped when entering buildings. Visitor Aware, the program’s name, took over paper sign-in sheets at every school.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti sent robocalls and emails. Posts went up on the district website and social media accounts. He explained that staff will check names against principal-made lists of people banned from buildings according to BridgeDetroit.

“We realize this is a new process and may be frustrating for some visitors, but please keep in mind that this is another safety strategy we are implementing to keep everyone safe and accountable,” Vitti noted in the announcement…
