LDS Church announces ward-level change: Women can serve in Sunday School presidencies

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, March 18, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) β€” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced a policy change that will allow a woman to serve as Sunday School presidents, assisted by female counselors and a secretary from their wards.

If a male member of the congregation is called as Sunday School president, he must hold the Melchizedek Priesthood, and his counselors must be male members of the ward.

β€œThe First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles have determined that, effective immediately, the bishop may call a man or a woman to serve as ward Sunday School president,” the First Presidency said in a letter to Church leaders worldwide…
