Rare ‘mountain shadow’ spotted over the Willamette Valley on Thursday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A stunning sunrise view hit the skies Thursday morning around the Willamette Valley as a striking “mountain shadow” was cast by Mt. Hood. As the sun rose behind the mountain, its light was partially blocked, which projected a long and triangular shadow across the sky.

Mountain shadows are most common during sunrise or sunset times when the sun is low on the horizon. While the shadow looks dramatic in the sky, it’s a completely normal optical effect and not a sign of volcanic activity.

This morning’s view was especially vivid with bright orange, pink, and yellow colors lighting up the clouds while the mountain’s shadow cut across the scene.
