Hollywood Icon Val Kilmer “Reborn” on Screen Through AI in New Indie Film

Hollywood is abuzz with conversations surrounding the future of creativity and the legacy of its stars, particularly with the rise of generative artificial intelligence. Now, an independent film, As Deep as the Grave, is making waves by bringing beloved actor Val Kilmer back to the silver screen posthumously, thanks to the power of AI.

Years before his passing in 2025, Kilmer was personally cast by writer-director Coerte Voorhees, who meticulously crafted the role with the actor in mind. As Voorhees shared with Variety, “He was the actor I wanted to play this role.

It was very much designed around him. It drew on his Native American heritage and his ties to and love of the Southwest.”

Why AI Stepped In: A Tribute, Not a Recast

Kilmer’s valiant battle with throat cancer ultimately prevented him from filming his scenes. However, Voorhees was resolute in his decision not to abandon the character or the actor’s vision. Instead, he turned to generative AI, collaborating closely with Kilmer’s family to ensure the role was completed with the utmost care and respect.

This familial support proved crucial in the decision-making process. “His family kept saying how important they thought the movie was and that Val really wanted to be a part of this,” Voorhees recounted.

“He really thought it was important story that he wanted his name on. It was that support that gave me the confidence to say, okay let’s do this.

Despite the fact some people might call it controversial, this is what Val wanted.”

Val Kilmer’s Role in As Deep as the Grave

As Deep as the Grave tells the compelling true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris as they delve into Navajo history within Arizona’s breathtaking Canyon de Chelly. The film features Abigail Lawrie and Tom Felton in leading roles, with Wes Studi and Abigail Breslin lending their talents in supporting capacities.

Val Kilmer’s character, Father Fintan, manifests as a profound spiritual presence within the film’s narrative. His performance is meticulously constructed using a blend of archival footage, personal family materials, and recordings from later in his life. Furthermore, his distinctive voice has been artfully recreated using AI, a technology previously employed after his tracheal procedure, notably when he reprised his iconic role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick.

The production itself was a six-year journey, navigating delays brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and budgetary challenges. At one point, Kilmer’s scenes were even removed entirely, only for the creative team to realize the film felt incomplete without his presence. This realization ultimately led them back to generative AI as the innovative solution to honor his original casting.

This pioneering decision arrives amidst a burgeoning debate surrounding the use of AI in filmmaking, as creators increasingly explore its potential while actors vocalize concerns regarding consent, control, and the ethical implications of the technology.
