NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Demolition of an old Newport News shopping center could begin as early as Friday, clearing the way for construction of a new public library, city officials said.
The Sherwood Shopping Center off of Warwick Boulevard will be torn down, and in its place, the new Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom Library will be built.
The original Grissom Library is located nearby on Deshazor Drive. Having opened in 1977 and at 16,635 square feet, the current building has exceeded its service life after more than 45 years of use.
