Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester installs new bishop

Rochester, N.Y. — Hundreds of people gathered Thursday at Sacred Heart Cathedral as the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester installed John Bonnici as its 10th bishop.

“With faith and the Lord Jesus Christ and with the love of God in my heart, I do accept the pastoral care, the people of God in the Diocese of Rochester,” Bonnici said. “I resolve to serve faithfully the spiritual needs of this local church.”

Pope Leo XIV appointed Bonnici to succeed retiring Bishop Salvatore Matano in leading the diocese, which includes some 300,000 members at 86 parishes across 12 counties…
