Fire on Staten Island block prompts FDNY response. Man on scene offers account of what happened

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The FDNY responded Thursday evening to a fire in a garage attached to a home in New Dorp.

Firefighters were dispatched around 5:20 p.m. to reports of smoke rising from the property at 323 Rose Ave., between 10th and Clawson streets, according to an FDNY spokesperson.

As neighbors watched, wisps of smoke lingered over the blackened roof as crews tore away charred wood and shingles to ensure the fire was fully contained.

A 25-year-old man, who requested his name not be published, said he had been renting the space for automotive repair work. He told a reporter on the scene that a stray spark from a welding project ignited a tablecloth…
