Des Moines pet store owner charged with animal neglect

DES MOINES, Iowa — Owner of Aqualand Pets Plus, Michael Jensen, faces five counts of animal neglect after an inspection found his Des Moines store noncompliant.

A January inspection by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship found many animals “not receiving proper care,” and two dead Savannah monitor lizards. The inspection was prompted by a complaint regarding the care and treatment of the animals.

In early February, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa took possession of two red iguanas and 11 snakes. Veterinary evaluation found that all 13 reptiles were underweight and showed signs of improper shedding…
