L.A. County Federation of Labor Hosts Event for Keith Ellison

Minnesota Attorney General speaks about importance of community organizing and labor’s role in fighting against injustice.

Labor, civic, and community leaders from throughout greater Los Angeles gathered on March 13 to support the reelection of Keith M. Ellison as Attorney General of the state of Minnesota.

Ellison, the first African American elected to statewide office in Minnesota, is also the first Muslim to hold a statewide office in the United States. In 2020, he gained national attention for his successful prosecution of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who murdered George Floyd by knelling on Floyd’s neck. Most recently, Ellison made headlines for suing the Trump administration to stop the ICE surge in Minnesota.

Ellison was in L A. to deliver the keynote address at the L.A. County Federation of Labor’s Annual Worker’s Conference. During the reception hosted by the L.A. County Fed at the Los Angeles Sentinel office, County Fed President Yvonne Wheeler explained the reason the labor movement backed the Minnesota attorney general.

“We are so grateful for the work that [Ellison’s] doing in Minnesota while under the assault of the guys in the White House. We wanted to get inspiration from him because we know that this fight is not over and also to say that L.A. stands with you during this time,” Wheeler said…
