Study begins on consolidating Reno, Sparks and Truckee Meadows fire agencies

A new study is underway to examine whether the Reno Fire Department, Sparks Fire Department and Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue should be consolidated into a single agency, as leaders cite a growing community, changing weather and gaps in resources as factors driving the effort.

Emergent Global Solutions, or EGS, is conducting the study and began outlining the process during a special community meeting Thursday night. EGS consultant Rick Martinez said the work is just getting started. “We just started our process, so we’re really in the very early stages,” Martinez said.

The study will examine response times, legal requirements, governance models and funding. Martinez described the effort as a chance to improve service. “This is looking for ways to enhance. I think every good organization, you know, takes a look at itself on occasion, and this is going to be one of those opportunities,” Martinez said…
