Historic Home Survives Hurricane Helene

In the mountains of western North Carolina, along the winding roads that follow the Cane River, there is a house that has quietly watched generations come and go.

It has stood through war, reconstruction, the rise and fall of rural economies, and most recently, the fury of Hurricane Helene. At more than 130 years old, it remains, a survivor in a landscape that has seen so much change.

This is the story of the Whittington family house.

A House With Deep Roots

While the structure we see today largely dates to the late 19th century, the story of this home reaches back even further. Originally, a log house stood on this site, likely built sometime in the 1820s 0r 1830s, when this part of the mountains was still a developing frontier.
