‘Hugely capable’: How people with disabilities are baking dog treats and breaking barriers in West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This week, workers at Hope Network joined Beer City Dog Biscuits to make treats for pets. Their message: People with disabilities are wildly capable.

Beer City Dog Biscuits hires individuals with disabilities to create their dog biscuits, calling them the “Brew Bakers.”

“When I joined the team in 2019, we had 25 Brew Bakers,” said Jennifer Romain, executive director of Beer City Dog Biscuits. “Now in 2026, we have 300 Brew Bakers that come through our doors every week and help us make biscuits.”…
