10-year-old released from hospital after Winter Haven hit-and-run that killed his friend

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — A 10-year-old who suffered multiple injuries after being struck by a hit-and-run driver is now recovering at home with his family, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities confirmed Friday the boy had been released from the hospital. He suffered a broken leg, broken arm, and a skull fracture during the March 11 incident that resulted in the death of his 8-year-old friend, Gabriel Carter.

The two boys were at a church function that evening at the Faith Baptist Church in Winter Haven when they began crossing the street and were hit by an SUV that continued driving.

Deputies later identified the driver of the SUV as 30-year-old Victoria Johnson. According to the sheriff’s office, Johnson contacted them a day after the crash to report her 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe as stolen.

Detectives said Johnson’s story on what happened to her vehicle changed a few times, but she eventually admitted to driving it the night of the crash and told them she “thought she might have hit someone.”…
