Merger of two top Knoxville TV stations consolidates broadcast power

Two of Knoxville’s largest TV stations have the same owner now that the Federal Communications Commission approved the multibillion sale of ‌Tegna to Nexstar.

Nexstar, owner of WATE, said it closed its acquisition of Tegna, owner of WBIR, following approval from the FCC and the U.S. Department of Justice.
