Liverpool school workers to face layoffs as budget deficit reaches millions

SALINA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Layoffs seem to be inevitable for the Liverpool Central School District due to a massive budget deficit.

Liverpool staff are expected to be notified about whether they’ll keep their jobs by early April. Superintendent Richard Chapman projects that the number of laid-off employees could reach into the 80s. Chapman laid out the data about the school’s budget and staff at a recent Salina town board meeting.

The budget has gone up incrementally with each school year since 2017. The latest budget, for the 2026-2027 school year, is projected at just under $223 million. That’s about a $20 million increase (an increase of 10%) from the previous year’s budget. For this latest one, $98 million is going toward paying the school district’s workers…
