Did last week’s rain improve drought conditions?

A fairly snowy winter may have distracted from thoughts of the word “drought,” but northwest Ohio has actually been in drought conditions since at least September 2025.

With snow cover melted and heavy rainfall last week, have those conditions improved?

Data from the U.S. Drought Monitor suggest parts of northwest Ohio have seen some improvement as of March 19, when the monitor last updated. For all of 2026 so far, the southern half of Lucas County and nearly all of Wood County were categorized as being in an “extreme drought,” the second-highest available drought category. Other counties, including Henry, Defiance and parts of Hancock were also in this category…
