Millions of snow geese flock to Havana, Illinois for annual rest stop

In Central Illinois, once a year, the sky comes alive as millions of snow geese descend on a place most people have never heard of.

The small town of Havana, Illinois, is a place where most shop close for the winter. And the population is outnumbered — by birds.

The town’s Emiquon Nature Preserve was created when the Nature Conservancy bought thousands of acres worth of farmland to let the floodplains breathe again. Native plants woke up, fish came back and then a sound that had not been heard in ages — the sound of the snow geese.
