Hello, Ann Arbor: Blimpy Burger’s future in hands of new owners

ANN ARBOR, MI – Blimpy Burger is in my family’s blood as thick as grease.

When my grandfather Don went to University of Michigan Law School in the 1950s, he frequented one of the famed “Krazy” Jim Shafer’s two burger stands at the time. While one was Jumbo Burger at the corner of Liberty and Fifth, Don frequently bought sacks of burgers from the original Blimpy Burger on the corner of Division and Packard.

My dad also worked as a fry cook in the 1970s. I later gained my freshman 15 gorging on triples and fried zucchini in the 2010s when Rich Magner was the owner, taking over after Shafer’s death in 1992…
