Chautauqua County officials are advising residents who have been to a DMV office recently to monitor their accounts due to ongoing issues with debit or credit card users getting double charged for a single transaction. The problem has persisted since the New York State DMV’s rollout of its DRIVES software update in February. Local DMV offices are not authorized to issue refunds directly, and the State DMV is taking three to five business days to process refunds. Chautauqua County Clerk Greg Carlson indicated that the county’s three DMV offices will continue to process debit and credit card transactions, but he encourages customers to use cash or check when completing in-person DMV transaction until the state resolves the software issue causing the double charges.
