Ask Lucas: On Guardians opening day, do I toss my Chief Wahoo gear?

Dear Lucas: Ever since spring training began, I’ve been counting the days until I can sit in a chair at Progressive Field, crack a beer and stuff my face with hot dogs while Jose Ramirez hits dingers. I’ve been a Guardians fan since the very beginning, and before that I was a Cleveland Indians fan. As such, I have a bunch of Chief Wahoo gear to which I’m attached. Some younger family members give me a hard time for sporting the team’s old mascot, and I’m starting to wonder if it’s time to throw out the old Chief Wahoo gear and get with the times.

: I get it. Any Ohioan old enough to need a regular colonoscopy has fond memories of Chief Wahoo and the good ol’ days of the Cleveland Indians.

As a kid, I remember being so inspired by the team’s hot streak in the ‘90s, I would join neighborhood pickup games and swagger up to the tee with my Chief Wahoo hat and plastic yellow bat, doing the Jim Thome “point,” only to whack the tee, have the ball go backward and then trip over home plate while waddling to first base…
