Panhandle sheriffs say they won’t seek immigration cases unless crimes are involved

Sheriffs across Florida’s Panhandle are drawing a clearer line on how far they believe local law enforcement should go in immigration enforcement, saying their priority is pursuing criminal activity rather than targeting people solely for being in the country illegally.

In Hamilton County, Sheriff Brian Creech said his office is not seeking out immigration cases on its own.

“I know immigration is a hot topic right now. If they’re committing crimes, we’ll take action then. If they’re not committing crimes… we’re not out there to bother them,” Creech said…
