Madison homeless shelter to open by June, weighs limits for users

As Dane County officials await responses for a bid to operate an overflow homeless shelter, city of Madison officials are preparing for the new men’s shelter to open up this spring.

Some people, including current shelter guests and housing advocates, still have unaddressed concerns but wait with anticipation for the transition.

Construction of the city-owned shelter is nearly complete as the final furnishings arrive at 1904 Bartillon Drive on Madison’s east side. Porchlight Inc., the nonprofit that manages the current men’s shelter, is readying staff and guests for the transition to the new building, which will be run as an overnight facility and not open 24/7…
